Message #391, Matthew 9:35-10:26, "Five Lifelong Lessons" Part 1 Sunday, September 15, 2019 In this portion of Scripture, we will study the initial call of Jesus' first twelve disciples to be His apostles. You're invited to join us in learning from these students who Christ commissioned to declare His message, and given authority to validate that message with divine expressions of His mercy. We'll touch on the difference between this first send off with the subsequent commission of the seventy disciples, and then of the Great Commission. We'll do this in order to accurately divide the word (2 Timothy 2:15) and draw out biblical applications. Our sermon questions are as follows: 1)How does God produce in me Jesus' compassion for people? 2)Who does God call to serve Him, and what does He give us to fulfill His calling? 3)How does God fuel our faithfulness and courage in the face of external opposition and internal fears? Message #386, Matthew 8:5-17, "Faith's Unconsidered Cost" Sunday, August 11, 2019 We continue in Matthew chapter eight, studying three more examples of Jesus power and authority. His compassionate exercise of both are set before us as proof that Jesus was the promised Messiah. In this study, we'll consider Jesus' healing of the centurion's servant, of Peter's mother-in-law, and of the multitudes. Our sermon questions are as follows: 1) Do I understand the exercise of God's authority for my benefit is an expression of His grace? That it is not a response to my worthiness or to my works? 2) What are the purposes of God's promises? 3) Do I look to God for all things, whether I perceive they are big or small? 4) Whose needs am I aware of that Jesus is inviting me to bring to Him? How can I do this so that they have an opportunity to believe Jesus is the promised Messiah? Message #384, Matthew 7:1-29, "Pilgrim or Pretender?" Sunday, July 28, 2019 Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with a challenge to His disciples to examine themselves in light of all Jesus has just taught. Jesus encourages them with two promises that are essential for their growth. And Jesus warns them against external and internal threats, including the risk of self-deception. Our sermon questions are: Why must I Biblically assess my life before I help another believer? And why is prayer critical to both? (Matthew 7:1-12) What is God's measure of true discipleship? How do discernment and obedience protect me from deception? (Matthew 6:19-34) Related verses: Matthew 5:7 Matthew 6:12,14-15 James 2:13 Micah 7:18-20 Psalm 51:1-17 John 7:24 Philippians 1:6 Hebrews 12:2 Matthew 5:1-2 John 14:6 Acts 4:12 2 Corinthians 13:5 Psalm 26:2 Psalm 139:23-24 Lamentations 3:40 Calvary Chapel Reston Station 1950 Isaac Newton Sq. Message #382, Matthew 6:1-15, "Why Motives Matter" Sunday, July 14, 2019 Jesus teaches us through this portion of the Sermon on the Mount how His disciples are to practice giving and prayer. This humbling instruction from Jesus builds upon the previous chapter's lessons on the disciple God blesses and how our God is concerned with both the outward actions and the inward motives. Our sermon questions are: How does my relationship with God affect how I give? How should I give so that my heavenly Father is glorified? (Matthew 6:1-4) What is prayer? What does God reveal about Himself and about me through prayer?
